Sinkaos vs WhatsApp and Signal for coordinating field teams

WhatsApp and Signal are excellent messengers, and many teams already run their operations in a group chat. We set them against Sinkaos below and point out where a messenger is the better choice.

WHO EACH TOOL IS FOR

Messengers are built for conversations. Operations also need a picture.

WhatsApp is a general messenger from Meta for personal and business chats. Messages, calls, photos, voice notes and live location are end-to-end encrypted with the Signal protocol, and groups can hold up to 1024 members.

Signal is run by an independent nonprofit. Its encryption protocol is open source, it carries no ads, and its group system is designed so the service keeps no record of who is in which group, which makes it a strong choice for private conversations.

Sinkaos is a workspace for field operations. Chat is one part of it; the rest is a shared map of people, incidents and tasks, offline mission packs, roles and guests, and a timeline you can replay afterwards. It is aimed at organisations such as rescue teams, councils, security operations and event organisers. Read more about moving beyond WhatsApp and radio.

WHICH ONE

Which one fits your team

Stay with WhatsApp when

The group is small, everyone already has it, and the work is mostly talking. For a club outing or a quick neighbourhood clean-up, a group chat with a pinned message is hard to beat.

Choose Signal when

Privacy of the conversation itself matters most and you need nothing beyond messages and calls. Signal encrypts everything you send end to end, and its group design keeps membership away from the service.

Choose Sinkaos when

You need to know who is where on one map, turn reports into incidents and tasks, keep working without signal, and reconstruct what happened later. See team location sharing and incident logging.

Choose Sinkaos when

Phone numbers are a problem. Volunteers, guests from partner organisations and staff can join without handing out a private number, and guests lose access when the operation closes.

Use both when

People keep their messenger for private life and informal chat, while the operation itself runs in Sinkaos. Nothing stops you from keeping a WhatsApp group for social news.

Think twice about Sinkaos when

You need every piece of data end-to-end encrypted, including positions and records. In Sinkaos those are encrypted in transit and at rest, but the server reads them so it can sync and raise alerts.

FAQ

Questions about switching from a messenger

Is Sinkaos more secure than Signal?
For messages and files both use end-to-end encryption. Signal applies it to everything you send. Sinkaos keeps positions, incidents and tasks readable by the server so it can sync them and run geofences and alerts. The Security page lists exactly what the server sees.
Can we keep using WhatsApp alongside Sinkaos?
Yes. Many teams will. Sinkaos holds the operation: positions, incidents, tasks and the record. Informal chat can stay where it is.
Do members need to give a phone number?
No. Sinkaos accounts use an email or username with a password, passkeys, an authenticator app or your organisation’s single sign-on.
What happens when there is no signal?
The map, plan, tasks and last known positions are already on the phone in the mission pack. Reports, photos and messages are saved and sent when a link appears. More in offline maps.
Is Sinkaos free like WhatsApp and Signal?
Sinkaos is in early access. Ask us about terms in the early access request.
