Geofence: a virtual boundary that raises an alert

A geofence is an area drawn on a digital map, linked to a rule. When a tracked person, vehicle or device enters it, leaves it or stays inside longer than allowed, the system raises an alert. Teams put them around danger zones and search sectors, and use them to notice when equipment leaves a site.

How a geofence works

Every geofence has two parts. The first is the shape: a polygon around a building, a circle around a hazard, a corridor along a route. The second is the rule that says what counts as an event. The common triggers are:

  • Enter: a team member walks into a closed danger zone.
  • Exit: a patrol vehicle leaves its assigned sector.
  • Dwell: someone has been inside an area for longer than a set time.
  • Threshold: a sensor inside the area passes a value, such as a river gauge above 200 cm.

A geofence at a festival

The security lead of a three-day festival draws a geofence around the backstage area and another around the emergency exit lane by the north gate. The exit lane must stay clear, so any staff vehicle that remains inside it for more than five minutes raises an alert to the operator. A second rule warns when the last steward leaves the backstage zone during the headline set. Nobody has to keep an eye on the map for either rule, because the operator gets an alert. The event security plan guide shows where rules like these fit into the wider plan.

Geofencing in Sinkaos

Watches on areas, times and values

Rules on areas, times, objects and sensor values: enter, exit, dwell and threshold crossings.

Alerts tied to the picture

An alert appears on the map and can become an incident with an owner, tasks and a history.

Positions only from those sharing

Geofences use the positions of members who share their location. The Security page lists exactly what the server sees and why.

Carried into the next operation

Templates and cloning bring the zones and watches of an earlier event into a new one.

Geofences in practice

Does a geofence work without mobile signal?
An alert depends on positions reaching the operation. A phone without signal keeps recording its track and sends it when a link returns, so an alert based on that track arrives late. Plan sensitive zones with that delay in mind.
Is geofencing staff legal under UK GDPR?
It can be, with a clear purpose, a lawful basis, tracking limited to working time and an information notice for the people tracked. Our guide to UK GDPR and location tracking walks through the questions to answer first.
What is the difference between a geofence and a sector?
A sector divides the work: who searches or guards which part. A geofence watches an area and reacts to events. The same polygon can do both jobs.
